About National Safe Schools Week

The week of October 16-22, 2011 is National Safe Schools Week (NSSW). According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 1 million students across America take a weapon to school each month, and over 1.3 million students are injured or threatened with a weapon each year.

National Safe Schools Week provides an opportunity to empower students to keep their schools safe by encouraging them to speak up against school violence.

NATIONAL STUDENT DESIGN PROJECT 2011 RECOGNIZED STUDENTS ANNOUNCED!

Thank you to everyone who submitted entries for the Student Design and Writing Project. We received some great submissions from schools and students around the nation.

We are happy to announce our recognized student submissions! Lauryn Wood from Liberty, NC is our recognized student for her t-shirt design. Her design will be turned into a t-shirt for every student in her class.

Kelly Rozanitis from Mullica Hill, NJ is the recognized student for the writing submission. She will receive an iPod shuffle for her entry; and both Lauryn and Kelly's schools will receive the SPEAK UP School Safety Package. Here is an excerpt from Kelly's essay, It Could Be Anyone:

"Now, walking through the hallways, you see his work. You look at what just happened, only minutes before. 2 students with their entire lives ahead of them lie on the floor, cold. A look of pain yet to be relaxed on the faces of the recently killed. Countless other lives forever changes. Nothing will ever be the same for any of these kids. Now take a step back. Rewind. Only 24 hours earlier. The boy with the beautiful blue eyes walks up to you, and cries out, "I hate every one in this school! I could just shoot them all!" Unsure of what he is capable of, you tell a teacher. After a locker search, they find 4 guns, all loaded. The girl with the Harvard scholarship gets the opportunity to become the lawyer she's always wanted to be this time. The boy with the scholarship for football, with potential to be a professional, gets to go to the college he's always dreamed of. Every day, you're faced with decisions that can change not only your life but the lives of those around you. Make the right decision, and if you see or hear something, speak up!"
