Getting the SPEAK UP Message Out Safe Schools Week (October 21-27, 2007) is about raising awareness of the urgent need to keep our schools and communities free from violence. One of the most important things you can do is to speak up if someone you know makes a weapon-related threat, either by telling a trusted adult or calling 1-866-SPEAK-UP. There are other important ways to SPEAK UP during Safe Schools Week as well: Tell others about 1-866-SPEAK-UP and encourage others to call when they hear of weapon-related threats. There are lots of people to tell and lots of ways to raise awareness. All you have to do is think about whom you want to reach, how you want to reach them and then do it! DISTRIBUTE SPEAK UP materials to your Community: Hand out SPEAK UP posters, key chains, wallet cards and brochures at school and through community meetings, conferences and other venues. For SPEAK UP materials, contact speakup@paxusa.org. DESIGN a Bulletin Board: Devote a bulletin board to Safe Schools Week providing facts, suggested activities and the 1-866-SPEAK UP hotline information. See the Know the Facts section of this website for statistics and bulletin board-worthy information. For more ideas and suggestions for how to get the press involved, please download the 2007 Safe Schools Week Events and Activites Guide. It is available for free in the Activities Section of this website.
